Flooring FAQ: License, Services, and Booking in North Jersey
Updated: Oct 14
Answers to common questions about Smith Family Flooring LLC — licensing, services, service area, booking, and installation in Sussex, Morris, and Warren counties, New Jersey.
Are you licensed?
Yes. Smith Family Flooring LLC is fully licensed, bonded, and insured under New Jersey Home Improvement Contractor registration 13VH13040300, issued by the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs. You can verify the registration on the Division of Consumer Affairs contractor lookup before you sign. We keep our legal name, phone, and license consistent across our website and Google profile so you can confirm you are dealing with the right company.
What do you install?
We install luxury vinyl plank (LVP), luxury vinyl tile (LVT), hardwood, engineered wood, laminate, carpet, and VCT. We also sand and refinish hardwood, repair subfloors, apply self-leveling when needed, and offer installation-only when you already bought the material. Commercial flooring is available for offices and similar spaces in our service area. Free in-home consultations help match the right floor to each room.
Where do you work?
We are a service-area flooring contractor based in the Newton / Stillwater, NJ area. We serve Newton, Stillwater, Sparta, Andover, Hopatcong, Hackettstown, Blairstown, Vernon, Roxbury, and nearby towns in Sussex, Morris, and Warren counties, New Jersey. If your town is close to that list and you are unsure, call (973) 866-9517 and we will tell you whether we can take the job.
How do I book?
Call (973) 866-9517 or email smithfamilyflooringllc@gmail.com to schedule a free in-home consultation. We bring samples when needed, measure the rooms, check the subfloor, and discuss materials and timeline. We quote after an in-home measure—not from a phone estimate alone—so the number matches your house.
Do you install flooring I already bought?
Yes. Installation-only is a core option. If you already purchased LVP, hardwood, laminate, carpet, or similar material, we can often install it after we confirm the product and the subfloor are suitable. Bring the product details or leave the boxes on site for the measure visit. We still prepare the floor properly; a good install depends on a flat, clean base as much as on the material.
LVP vs hardwood for a Sussex County basement?
For most Sussex County basements, luxury vinyl plank is the safer everyday choice. Basements see more moisture and humidity swings than upper floors, and waterproof or water-resistant LVP handles that better than solid hardwood. Hardwood can work in some controlled spaces, but it is more sensitive to moisture and movement below grade. We look at your basement conditions in person and recommend the product that will last—not just the one that looks best in a showroom.
How long does a typical room take?
Many single rooms finish in about one to two days once the site is ready, but timing depends on demolition, subfloor repairs, acclimation, and finish type. Hardwood refinishing needs dry time between coats. Multi-room or whole-home jobs take longer and are scheduled as a clear plan after the measure. We give a realistic schedule when we quote—not a one-size answer.
What is self-leveling and when do you need it?
Self-leveling is a pourable cement underlayment that creates a flat surface over uneven concrete or patched areas. You need it when the slab or subfloor is too out of level for LVP, rigid vinyl, or other floors that telegraph dips and peaks. Skipping it can cause hollow spots, telegraphing, and early wear. We check flatness during the in-home measure and include self-leveling in the quote only when the floor needs it.
How do I verify the HIC number?
Our New Jersey HIC registration is 13VH13040300. Use the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs public contractor search, enter Smith Family Flooring LLC or 13VH13040300, and confirm the registration is active. Also match our phone (973) 866-9517 and website https://www.smithfamilyflooringllc.com/ so you are not talking to a different company with a similar name. There is an unrelated inactive Leesburg, VA business with a similar name—we are the Newton / Stillwater, NJ company only.
How much does flooring installation cost?
We quote after an in-home measure. Price depends on material, room size, subfloor condition, removal of existing floors, and stairs or transitions. We do not publish a single square-foot number that would mislead. Call (973) 866-9517 to schedule the free visit.
Squeaky Floors & Soft Spots
Why do my floors squeak, and can it be fixed without replacing the whole floor?
Squeaks are common and usually easy to fix. They happen when floorboards or the subfloor rub against nails or each other as wood naturally shrinks and swells through northern New Jersey's dry winters and humid summers. Most of the time an installer can quiet them right where they are by re-securing the subfloor to the joists, often with a few screws from above or below. Squeaky boards can usually be tightened in place, so replacing the whole floor is rarely needed.
What causes a soft or spongy spot in my floor?
A soft spot usually means a section of subfloor under the finished floor needs attention. Often a panel has loosened from the joists, or an area near a sink, dishwasher or exterior door has seen moisture over the years. It's a normal repair: the section is re-secured or replaced, and the floor feels solid again.
Should squeaks and soft spots be fixed before new flooring goes in?
Yes, and it's the best time to do it. A solid, flat subfloor helps new hardwood, waterproof LVP, laminate or carpet lie flat, stay quiet and last longer. During free in-home estimates in Sussex, Morris and Warren counties, Smith Family Flooring LLC checks the subfloor and handles any repairs as part of the job, so the new floor starts on a good base.
